Web hosting, domain name, server, hosting… For a novice, you can easily get lost in the meanders of computer terms. That’s why we are giving you a small lexicon to help you find your way more easily.

Little practical lexicon

Let’s start with the basics: the domain name is the address of your website. It’s his plain name and the way to contact you via the Internet.

Secondly, servers are huge storage spaces for files, data, and websites’ information. Servers have infinite memory and only collect and store data. Then, web hosting becomes handy.

Web hosting is a data storage space and is a service offered to help you store and manage the files of your website. In fact, the web host is the company that deals and manages the servers that contain the data, files, and information of your website. When you’re dealing with a web hosting company, you’re renting some storage space on the web servers, so your data, files, and information can be stored and managed by experts.

The different types of web hosting

Now that we understand the latest concepts, we can now turn to the different types of web hosting, in order to make the most informed choice possible in the creation of your own website.

  • Shared hosting: Shared hosting is the most economical choice that exists. This type of hosting works like this: several websites are contained on the same server and share the same resources. But, the resources are not necessarily equally distributed between all the websites on the server… And the same server can contain up to 3,000 sites! That’s why shared hosting becomes the right solution for beginners, for web sites with low traffic, for developing websites or simply for testing.
  • VPS hosting: Meaning “Virtual Private Server”, VPS hosting is based on the same idea as shared hosting, but only it’s his improved version. This type of hosting is based on the principle that the same server is shared between a maximum of 20 websites. By reducing the amount of site on the same server, it drastically increases the speed and efficiency of the server. VPS hosting offers equal sharing between websites. This means that every website gets the same memory and the same space on the web server. In addition, as its name suggests, Virtual Private Server hosting allows you to own your space on the server, unlike shared hosting where you only rent the space, without actually owning it.
  • Dedicated hosting: Logically, dedicated hosting is a type of hosting that allows a single server to operate and store data from a single website. All available resources of a web server are therefore exclusive to a single website. This is could be the right fit for companies with a website having a high rate of visitors per month, for example, more than 100,000 visitors per month. It’s also the safest and most effective option for companies with specific IT needs, but also for businesses where privacy and data and information protection is essential.
  • Cloud hosting: To put it simply, cloud hosting is the 2.0 version of the VPS hosting. It’s the improved version, even more powerful and safer. In fact, this kind of hosting offers a multitude of options in terms of computer security, as its ability to counter hacking attacks. Cloud hosting is the right choice for large companies with a large budget, but also for companies where data protection is essential.

In the end…

Web hosting is a smart way to simplify your life when it comes to managing your website, but also to help you decide what best suits your needs. At Inovision, we are pleased to offer you this service, in addition to offering all the computer support necessary for the creation of your website.
